Commencement is a solemn, but celebratory occasion for graduates, their families, faculty and administration.
Graduates
All graduates are encouraged to wear the traditional cap and gown. Please refer to your school’s website for information regarding how to obtain ceremony regalia. The addition of adornments (such as stoles, pins, etc.) to the academic attire is discouraged. Graduates are requested to adhere to the American Council on Education’s “Academic Costume Code” which stipulates that “nothing should be worn on the academic gown.”
Guests
The ceremony does take place outdoors on the university’s main academic quad. Business casual is suitable attire for Commencement, and families and guests are advised to wear comfortable shoes. This being New England, however, the weather in mid-May is often unpredictable, so families are urged to be prepared.
