Rain and Severe Weather Plans
Phase I
Because Tufts does not have an indoor facility large enough to accommodate graduates and their guests (about 15,000 people) for Phase I, the Commencement Committee has recommended that in the event of heavy rain, an abbreviated ceremony will take place at the main Commencement site. In case of severe weather, Phase I may be cancelled.
Phase I is also simulcast via the Internet and is available for viewing in a number of locations: ASEAN Auditorium, Cabot Center; Cohen Auditorium; and Steve Tisch Sports and Fitness Center, Room 301. Other school or department ceremonies may also be affected by weather.
In the event of rain, some buildings and dining halls will be opened for guests. Dining Hall locations will be announced by Dining Services staff at the lunch distribution site on the Tisch Library Lawn.
An announcement regarding any changes in the Commencement Day schedule will be made prior to the start of Phase I. The website will also be updated with any potential announcements as they become available. You are urged to be prepared with appropriate clothing, including low-heeled shoes, umbrellas, ponchos—and a good sense of humor.
Phase II
Some Phase II ceremonies take place in an indoor facility, while others will be outside, including some under tents. Please consult the Commencement website and social media announcements for any Phase II severe weather planning updates. In the event of rain, indoor live webcast viewing locations may be available for those Phase II ceremonies taking place outdoors on The Green. Those viewing locations would be Braker 001, Barnum 008, Tisch Sports and Fitness Center Room 301, and Pearson 104.
