Commencement is a solemn, but celebratory occasion for graduates, their families, faculty and administration.

Graduates

All graduates are encouraged to wear the traditional regalia, a cap and gown. Students may order their regalia through this website. Please refer to your school’s website for information regarding what specifically is needed for your ceremony.  The addition of adornments (such as stoles, pins, etc.) to the academic attire is discouraged.  Graduates are requested to adhere to the American Council on Education’s “Academic Costume Code”, adopted by the university, recommending that “nothing should be worn on the academic gown.”

Guests

The Phase I, All-University ceremony (and two of the Phase II, department and school ceremonies) does take place outdoors (without tent coverage) on the university’s main academic quad. Business casual is suitable attire for Commencement, and families and guests are advised to wear comfortable shoes. This being New England, the weather in mid-May is often unpredictable, so families are urged to be prepared.
